Hour Cap

About Hour Cap

Time tracking built by a freelancer, for freelancers and teams who bill client hours.

The story

Hour Cap started as a solution to my own problem. As a freelance web developer working with retainer clients, I needed a simple way to track billable hours, keep an eye on monthly budgets, and push invoices to Xero without the overhead of bloated project management tools.

Every time tracker I tried either did too much or too little. Some were packed with features I didn't need, making simple tasks feel slow. Others were too basic, missing the retainer budget tracking and invoicing workflow that my business depends on. I wanted something focused, something that just worked for the way I actually bill clients.

So I built Hour Cap. It does one thing well: helps you track time against client budgets and turn that into invoices. Retainer budgets reset automatically each period. Fixed-price project caps keep you on track. And when it's time to bill, your time entries push straight to Xero with all the descriptions and line items ready to go.

I use it every day for my own business. That means it's built with the same care and attention I'd give to any client project, and it evolves based on real needs rather than feature checklists.

I'm a freelance web developer based in Brisbane, Australia with over 15 years of commercial experience. I hold a university degree in Information Technology and specialise in building web applications with Laravel, along with platforms like Statamic, Shopify, and WordPress.

I've worked with organisations of all sizes, from startups to enterprise companies and government departments, including clients like Culture Kings, Griffith University, Wotif Group, and the Museum of Brisbane. I focus on building fast, secure, and accessible websites and applications that are built to last.

Hour Cap is a product of the same approach I bring to client work: clean code, thoughtful design, and a focus on solving real problems. If you have questions or feedback, I'd love to hear from you.
